New painting
Hi everyone, my name is Emily and I’m an oil painter from Michigan. My paintings are mostly abstracted scenes of figures that I make up. I think of them as an exploration into the abstract nature of relationships and emotions. This painting is the second in a family portrait series. I began the series inadvertently when a friend asked me to paint something for his wife for Christmas. I wasn’t entirely sure what her artistic taste was, so I started brainstorming what I could possibly paint that would be special to her. They have two children, so I decided to attempt a portrait of their family in my style, keeping the faces blank and the blending the bodies into the landscape.
So far I haven’t been able to think of any better titles for these pieces other than “Family of Four” and “Family of Five.” I thought of using those titles for the individual paintings and then coming up with something more interesting as a title for the whole series. I’m hoping these might appeal to couples with children, or people with fond memories of their nuclear family and their childhood. That’s why I decided to do Family of Five. I grew up in a five member family, and when I look at it I get a little nostalgic.

So is this style something new or how long have you been working in this way? It’s very unique. Not that I think you should, but have you thought about using this approach to other subject matter?
These were the first pieces I’ve done that were meant to depict a family, but the style is similar to my other pieces, at least the other recent ones. Every time I do a new painting, I think I try something a little different and these portrait paintings are just what my work has evolved into right now.
I’m pretty stuck on doing scenes of people, but I would try anything. I’ve been thinking about doing landscapes in this style, without sticking any figures in.
I’m a broken family of four and we were soooooooooo happy then
so I get these on that emotional level
very human
very touching
