My First Encaustic Piece
This is my first encaustic endeavor. If you don’t know what encaustic art is it is artwork built up with layers of wax on a surface. The tools are basically wax, pigment, in my case, collage elements secured with fire or heat. I used a torch—it was a blast.
The collage elements are gelatin monotype print scraps from my botanical silhouette series. Other elements include a skeleton leaf from my garden and fragments of my handmade paper. As with the laser cutting experiment post, I don’t know where I’m going with this medium—I just know that I’ve always wanted to try it and thanks to Rae Dollard (check out her expert encaustics here: http://raedollard.com/) for the generous hands on tutorial and use of her fabulous studio!
Apparently, this is my year to experiment and broaden my skill set—bring it on 2012!

I’d love to see this piece in person and examine the details more closely. You should definitely continue on in this medium, it looks like it really suits you. You’re making me want to experiment more too!
I checked out that woman’s website and wow! Just gorgeous.
Sounds like fun. Never really looked into encaustics before, am I understanding this correctly… basically stuff held together by wax? what about those “orange cracks” are they part of the wax or your other materials?
Yes, for the work I’m showing you, I am holding together collage elements via wax. May encaustic artists, such as Rae, simply paint with wax and they develop incredibly deep jewel-like pieces. The cracks are a shellac brushed and then torched–too cool.
hey Kelly, could you ask what would happen to an oil painting if you used those different encaustic methods on it? very curious about what could happen.
Love this, just beautiful!
The layering on this is fabulous. I love the depth that comes with the medium. Beautiful!
This is gorgeous, Kelly. I took an encaustic class this summer, and it is HARD. Look forward to seeing what you do next with this…
