Still Life – Found No. 5
I started a still life series awhile back called “Found” and it’s been quite awhile since I have worked with still life so I decided to start back up again. These marbles (which are my son’s) were surprisingly more challenging than I thought they would be. The burning aspect is what made it so, and I think if I were working all in pencil and chalk that it would have proven easier. The main issue was attempting to burn the perfect little circle (the marbles were true to size) and being that burning goes into the wood, whereas pencil sits on top of the wood, the wood grain had a lot to say about the shape my little circles wanted to take. So as hard as I tried to make the perfect circle, they are not quite. Mixed media combination of woodburning, pencil and chalk. Total size is a tiny 4×4.

I like the circles that way! They’re playing tricks with my eyes..
Great stuff Lauren, your skill for rendering is always impressive.
i’m completely fascinated
wanting closeups
beautiful “still lifes”
what a timeless tradition
Hot damn, I love it. I think the woodburning makes it look watercolor-ish (which is ironic, no?) and I love that.
Feels like I could pluck them up in my fingers. As ever, I love your use of space: there’s so much of it, but your subject just inhabits it so completely or purposefully (if that makes any sense!).
